The Surrounding Area
The historic market town of Kendal has excellent shops, many restaurants, a sports and leisure complex, museums and cultural attractions and is about ten minutes drive from Levens. The village of Milnthorpe lies about three miles to the south and has banks, shops and a Chinese take-away. Levens Hall, famous for its topiary garden is within walking distance, as is Sizergh Castle, one time home of Katherine Parr. Many guide-books and leaflets featuring Lakeland drives, walks, local events, current exhibitions and other lake district attractions will be found in the cottage.
The Village
Lying at the foot of the lovely Lyth Valley, on the fringe of the Lake District National Park, Levens occupies the southern extremity of a limestone ridge which runs down from west of Kendal to the coastal plain and benefits from the particularly mild weather enjoyed around the shores of Morecambe
Bay. It is a quiet, friendly community with two pubs, a very good restaurant, general store, post office and Anglican and Methodist churches. Below the house, the fields of Lords Plain echo in spring to the cries of nesting curlews and across the valley, the dramatic 600 foot limestone cliffs of 'Whitbarrow' draw the eye and set the scene for glorious sunsets, all the year round. Levens is well placed as a touring base for the spectacular Lake District National Park and the Western Yorkshire Dales as the main routes to all areas intersect within minutes of the village.
